April was our second month of not meeting in person due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Through the use of technology, we had two great on-line meetings during the month. The first featured a presentation by Jonathan Boyd on the impact of the pandemic on the city of Allen. The program for the second virtual meeting was presented by Dr. Tyler Manning who gave us an update on the work to develop a vaccine for COVID-19. Both virtual meetings were well attended.
The board has decided to cancel all in-person meetings during May and instead will conduct online meetings on May 13 and May 27. Bill Fruit will present a market update for the program on May 13 and program coordinator Ted Gould is working on a program for May 27.
Quarter 2 member invoices have been on hold until we had more clarity on when we would resume in-person meetings. The board has decided to have invoices sent out with the assumption that we will be able to resume meetings in June. The meal component of active member invoices will cover meetings in June instead of the full quarter. If any June meetings are canceled, members will get a food credit on their Quarter 3 invoices.
The club’s flags were deployed during most of April as a reminder that we are all in this together as we fight the pandemic. The next flag deployment will be Memorial Day. Louise is always in need of flag volunteers so let her know if you can help.
Mike Waddell, the new president of the Allen Americans, has been invited to join the club. His induction into the club will be scheduled at a later date.
Our club has sponsored six Allen High School seniors with district grant scholarships and a seventh senior with a Steve Burch Memorial Scholarship. Scholarship recipient names will be posted on the club website.
