Carl Gilliland, a charter member of The Rotary Club of Allen and a past President of the club, passed away on January 18, 2023 at the age of 82.   A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, January 23, 2023 at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Chapel, 2525 Central Expressway North, Allen, Texas 75013. 

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Carl's memory to The Rotary Club of Allen at Rotary Club of Allen, P.O. Box 369, Allen, TX 75013 (with memo stating “ Carl Gilliland Scholarship” ) and the International Child Care USA, Inc, 1100 North Main Street, Suite 103-D, Ann Arbor, Michigan 48104.      

 

Welcome to our newest members: Angi Burns and Nunu King. Angi is the publisher of City Lifestyle Magazine and lives in Murphy with her husband Gary.  Nunu is a Realtor working with Berkshire Hathaway in Plano. She lives in Lucas with her husband Alex.

Richard Nelson (RC) has been proposed for membership to the club.  Richard is the new District Executive for the Circle Ten Council in Fairview. He lives in McKinney.

LaSheila Yates has been approved as a new associate member for the club.  LaSheila is the owner of Cultural Perspectives, LLC and recently moved to Allen with her husband Christopher from Cedar Rapids, Iowa.  We welcome LaSheila as a new member.

Albert Bryant has been approved by the club executive board for associate membership.  Bryant is a client relations specialist with Dawson Private Wealth.  Bryant's office is located in Allen.  He lives in Plano with his wife Erma.  Welcome Albert!

Texas State Representative Candy Noble will be our special program opening up the new year on Wednesday, January 5 at noon.  Noble is in her second term in the Texas House of Representatives. Her committee assignments for the 87th Legislative Session include the House Committees on Human Services, Ways & Means, and Resolutions Calendars.

Representative Noble also serves as the Republican Caucus Secretary and serves on the Board of the Texas Conservative Coalition.

Thanks again to all of the sponsors and volunteers who made the 2021 Rotary Christmas Parade a success.  Unofficially, it was the largest parade crowd we have had in years.  Officially, our club benefitted with over $4,300 in sponsorship revenue.  Thanks to Regina Taylor for coordinating the parade and making it a memorable one for the families and especially children in Allen.  Congratulations also to the winners of the Parade Float competition.

 

Congratulations to the club's past-president Tamika Washington for receiving a 2021 Star Award.  The Star Award recognizes a club member who has shown exemplary leadership and accomplishment during the 2020-2021 Rotary year.

 

 

Thanks to all the volunteers who helped raise money through the Eagle Stadium concession stand on October 22. Not only did members show up in force but they brought family members along to help pop popcorn, wrap hot dogs and serve hundreds (maybe thousands) of soft drinks. The concession stand showed over $25,000 in revenue meaning that the Rotary Club(s) earned a total of $2,545.66   Based on the number of volunteers, the noon club earned $1,934 and the Sunrise Club earned $610.  That was about $100 per volunteer.  GREAT JOB everyone.

The club will meet at the Allen High School restaurant Blu' for lunch on December 1st. Following lunch they will be entertained by a short Christmas music concert from the Allen High School Show Choir.  There will be no meeting at FUMC Allen on December 1st.  The lunch is included in your regular fees.  Guests are welcome for $15 per person.  All members planning to attend need to make a reservation with Tim Carroll before December 1st.  Bring your spouse or friend for this special club tradition. The board of directors voted in July to resume in-person Rotary Club of Allen meetings at FUMC Allen (601 South Greenville) .  We hope members and guests will join us at noon each Wednesday.  See you soon.

Rotary Blood Drive June 15 - June 20 at any donation center.   If you choose to give blood between now and June 20, make sure to mention our Rotary Club’s number (1816) and our Rotary District (5810).

 

 

 

Patrick Earley has been approved and was inducted as a new member with the club on August 7.  Welcome Patrick!  Patrick is president of Earley Electronics, Inc.

Four Allen High School juniors have been chosen to attend the 2019 Camp RYLA Leadership Camp. The scholarship camp will be held on July 28 - August 2.  The club will sponsor two students and the Allen Sunrise Rotary Club will sponsor the other two students.  This year's camp attendees include: Ritika Bhala, Jenna Lowenberg, Alyssa Holloway and Angelina Johnson.

Recipients were recently announced for the 2018 Rotary Club of Allen Community Grant Program.  Community Grants are intended to financially assist nonprofit organizations with specific programs that support quality of life, health improvement, education and poverty alleviation.

 

Community grants of $2,000 each were awarded to The Washington Foundation (Lil Jacob Learning Center); Allen Philharmonic (Concerts for Yiung Audiences); and Change the World (Various community projects).  Thank you to all who applied.
